After this lesson, you should be able to:

• Understand that a formula is the ratio of the symbols of the elements and number of atoms for each symbol in a compound
• Name compounds according to their elements, but also know some common names that do not follow this rule
• Explain what the terms monoxide, dioxide or trioxide in the naming of compounds mean 
• Represent the terms hydroxide, carbonate, nitrate and sulfate,  found at the ends of the names of compounds, with their symbols and vice-versa
